Read, check, illustrate, approve — without leaving the surface.

Every draft in one place. Editor, preview, evidence, image and approval sit side by side instead of on four pages.

What you can do with it

  • Go through every draft, newest first — a click opens the editor on the right.
  • Filter by content type: News, Analysis, Earnings report. The type shows on every draft that deviates from the norm.
  • Edit headline, standfirst, body and structured blocks.
  • Switch to preview and see the draft as a reading view — same surface, no extra load.
  • Start “generate image” for exactly this draft and see the winning image right in the preview.
  • Read the fact-check evidence next to the paragraphs it belongs to.
  • Approve, with a record of who did it — or take the approval back.
  • Search across titles and tags.

The thinking behind it

Anyone checking a draft had to leave the surface to read it, and leave again to illustrate it — and then could not find their way back to that particular article.

So preview is a toggle on the same surface, not a page: it renders the draft from fields that are already loaded, without another request.

And it turned out analyses, earnings reports and directors' dealings are not standalone end products at all, but feeds into the same workbench. They differ from the news stream only in what triggers them — so they belong in the same list, just distinguishable.

Nine analysis and earnings drafts sat indistinguishable among 2,292 news drafts.

Improvements

  1. Preview and image are part of the workbench

Preview is a toggle on the same surface. “Generate image” starts an image run for the open draft and shows the winner in the preview — with a raised time limit, because a run with critique rounds takes far longer than an ordinary call.

  2. Content type visible and filterable

The workbench did not even show a draft's type. There is now a type filter, and the type appears on a draft as soon as it deviates from the norm. Historic drafts with no type set still count as news and do not fall through the cracks.

  3. Evidence next to its paragraph

Fact-check results no longer sit as a block below the editor but level with the paragraph they belong to.

  4. The duplicate draft list is gone

A second view read the same list as the workbench — a duplicate ever since this one could filter by content type. It is gone, and no function went with it.
